Jesper Just utilise le langage du cinéma pour aborder et détourner les constructions stéréotypées de la masculinité et de la féminité produites par Hollywood, ainsi que la représentation subjective des minorités et des handicapés dans la culture de masse. Ses courts-métrages et ses installations vidéo à projections multiples interrogent les mécanismes de l’identification cinématique et brisent les attentes du public en matière de clôture narrative, en racontant des situations de rencontre quasi surréelles, émotionnellement ambiguës, ouvertes et souvent silencieuses. Alors que son recours à des musiques de film élaborées et riches joue un rôle crucial dans la création d’un sentiment déceptif de progression narrative, la musique plus que le discours sert aussi souvent de seul moyen de communication entre les protagonistes de ses intrigues énigmatiques. S’intéressant à la façon dont les sphères publique et privée définissent et façonnent la nature et l’ampleur des interactions humaines, Jesper Just joue par ailleurs avec la notion d’architecture dans ses films et ses installations pour refléter et élargir les parcours énigmatiques de ses personnages.
